Twins of Dubrava

The beautiful oak fell in love with the slender pine. No one knows the beginning of their friendship. Has the jay forgotten where he hid an acorn or did the squirrel lose a seed of the pine cone. Trees grew from sprouts and did not separate from each other more than 150 metres. Each year time would lean the oak to its slender pine. So they were left for life to grow and be cold, silently sigh and battle the storms.

In the forest of Dubrava the trunks of two trees have grown together – an oak and a pine – as if a symbol of love and faithfulness. Here, just like in songs of folklore, the oak is the beautiful young boy – an oak grows in the woods, what a kind tree, at his fathers’, in his heart, what a kind son. A pine is young girl – when I rode through the pine woods, through the green pine woods, I saw a girl raking hay in the meadow.

The extent of both of the trees is 360 cm. The pine well surpasses the oak with its height. The height of the pine is 33 meters, and the oak is 27 metres high. It is guessed that the trees could be about 150 years of age. According to the scientists, the pine should be the older one. The young oak growing next to the pine leaned on the pine until their branches intertwined, the lumps growing on the trunk of the oak would sink in the bark of the pine. That’s how the trees grew together for the rest of their days.

The two twin trees are growing in the Dubrava forest of Samylai eldership, district of Kaunas.
