Gastilonys Ridge (Kaišiadorys District Municipality)
Have you ever driven on a ridge? One of these, a bit smaller than a hill, is located in Rumšiškės forest of Kaunas Reservoir Regional Park. Gastilonys Ridge is a bit more than 3.5 kilometres long, featuring an unpaved forest road nearly along the entire of its length. Foresters use it to reach the logging areas, while tourists – their favourite recreation spots.
The elongated elevation of the ridge takes about 27 ha. Nearby the ridge there is the widest tree of this forest – Gastilonys Oak. What makes it special is its height and width of its branches. It would take more than several people to encircle it. The width of the 25 m oak is more than 5 metres. Although surrounded by lots of fallen trees, this mighty oak has easily withstood all storms so far. What makes it strong could be the place, where the oak was planted – the small hollow is always supplied with enough moisture.
