When walking through the forest of Linkmenai at night, a women bathing in the water can be supposedly seen at the magnificent pine growing on the shore of the Asalnai lake. The elderly say that next to the pine, the remains of a women or a girl are buried, that’s why the place is haunted.
In 19th century it was believed that the souls of women pass to live in the pines, which serve as purgatories.
The elderly of Dzūkija say that a dead woman in the dreams appoints to swing on the pine. It’s so hard for me to do on the pine. Many languish on the pine.
The Asalnai pine is especially strong. The extent of its trunk reaches up to three meters. And the curved, fine branches span to a height of 23 meters. According to the traditions of the old ones, pines growing near water, just like the Asalnai pine, were worshiped. Healing and clemency powers are assigned to them. Chapels are lifted into such pines or sacrifices are brought, health is asked in exchange.
The Asalnai pine, growing near the lake, can be found in the forest of Linkmenai, National Park of Aukštaitija.
