The Oak Balčiai
The oak of Balčiai of 300 years old has been called after a lake. The height of the tree growing by the lake Baltys reaches 19 meters. The width of the trunk is 4, 55 m.
Huge, thick and high oaks used to be considered as habitat of the devils from the very ancient times. Once a woodman was walking in the woods when the rain started to fall and the thunder started to roar and strike. He stands under a tree and sees there’s an oak nearby with a rotten cavity in it. Whenever a thunder passes a German man with a red hat comes out of this hole and makes faces in front of the cloud, and as soon as it roars again, this man dives into the hole again. And when Perkūnas was calm, the devils used to like to have fun under the oaks. As soon as it’s dark, gathered all the devils under this oak and danced, oh how they danced.
The oak of Balčiai reminding of the old times can be found in Verpys landscape conservation area near the lake Baltys.
