The stone of Viedzma

The legend, stories and tales surrounding the stones take sus to the past, when gods lived among people, when Perkūnas settled his relationship with his enemy the Devil, and Pixies and Witches were seducing the young men.

The stone of Viedzma. The name itself suggests that the withces had something to do with this stone. Besides, the Dzūkians called the witches „veidzmomis“

An evil spirit named Vokė was building the Liškiava castle – the masonry of a witch. To finish building, she carried a large stone from the fields of Liškiava, which is known as the Witch stone by the people.  But as the rooster crowed, the ties of the apron snapped and the masonry of the Witch was left unfinished. The stone of the witch lies in the fields of Liškiava. It has eighteen meters. And two meters in height measuring from the ground.

That is an authentic story of the Ricieliai people about the stone of Viedzma, written in 1934 by the historian Emilis Šneideris in 1934.

The belief in stones and in their magical powers of the ancient Lithuanians is immense. The stone was respected and protected. However, Lithuanians could not protect this stone. It was blown up by the soldiers in spring of 1941.

Now, in the place of this once huge stone, 13 separate massive pieces, each of one meter in height lie in the village of Liškiava, Varėna district. The people of Ricieliai also call this stone by the name of Neviera.
