Šuminai Pine

The fine Šuminai Pine received its name after the name of the village. The old pine tree branches out in the ethnographic village of Šuminai located on the shore of the Baluošas Lake. Currently there are 15 residents in the village and all of them carry the surname of Šuminai. The elderly pine is of 200-300 years old.
It was thought since the old days, that feminine deities live or reveal themselves in those places where the pines grow. And sometimes even witches. They don’t just feast at the pines. Witches gather tar for their feasts from the pines. From ancient times, pines have also been known as places of execution. The Šuminai Pine became well known during the times of Tadas Blinda. It was said, that the followers of Blinda would hang others as well as their own on the branches of the pine.
The height of the Šuminai Pine reaches to 17 metres. The diameter of its trunk reaches about a metre. The old one can be found at Šuminai village, Aukštaitija National Park.
