The Exposure of Dovainionys
The Exposure of Dovainionys situated in the highest place of Kaunas Lagoon Regional Park takes us 14 thousand years back. The layers of the earth affected by the glacial periods allow the geologists to find out how the proglacial lagoon had been developing, and what the climate was at that time. The Exposure of Dovainionys is also known as Mergakalnis (in English: the hill of girls). The legend has it that once women of impudent behaviour used to be rolled down this high cliff. Other girls, worn out by unrequited love, used to choose Mergakalnis voluntarily. It was not possible to stay alive for the girls suffering the unhappiness who jumped down the cliff or for those who were punished for their love. The height of the Exposure of Dovainionys is even 42 meters. The toughest are invited to the journey through the Exposure of Dovainionys, situated in Kaišiadorys district municipality. If you wish to reach the top of Mergakalnis, you need to climb steep forest paths. The view you get on the top of it, though, pays off all the sweat you shed. Kaunas Lagoon stretches as far as your eyes can see, in the middle of which there is an island loved by the birds, so named as the Island of Birds.
