The Oak of Kalniukai

The oak of Kalniukai rustling in the district of Zarasai is known as the place of prayers from the ancient times. People used to gather here to pray even in the beginning of the 20th century.

The crucifixes used to be affixed and the chapels used to be placed on the old oaks with exceptional appearance from the old times when Christianity was introduced. People used to bring sacrifices whenever they came to pray – cloths, bands or money. Oaks used to be considered sacred in pagan times as well. Places for the cults used to be established nearby and the sacred fire used to be kept. Oak symbolised strength and shelter.

The oak of Kalniukai, protected by the locals and favoured by the tourists, can be found in the village of Kalniukai, in the district of Zarasai.
